Redesign or audit first? A 3-question test for your store

A redesign fixes how a store looks. It doesn't fix a leak you haven't found. Three questions that tell you whether you need a redesign, an audit or neither.

Quick answer: redesign when you know what's broken and the design is the cause. Audit first when sales dropped or stalled and you can't point to the page where buyers leave. If the platform itself costs too much or blocks what you need, look at the stack before the design. If not enough people visit, neither a redesign nor an audit fixes that.

Question 1: can you name the page where buyers leave?

Open your analytics and follow a week of visitors from landing page to checkout. If you can say "most people leave on the product page" or "they reach checkout and stop at shipping", you know where to work. If you can't, a redesign is a guess with a big invoice.

Typical things an audit finds that a redesign would have copied straight into the new site:

  • A shipping policy that promises one price while checkout charges another.
  • A 2 MB hero image on every product page.
  • An app you pay for that duplicates something Shopify now does for free.

None of these need a new design. They need someone to find them.

If you can't name the page: audit first.

Question 2: is the platform the problem, or the pages?

Some stores outgrow their setup. Signs it's the platform, not the design:

  • You pay a developer every month just to keep it running (patches, updates, extension conflicts).
  • Licence, hosting and extensions cost more than the store's marketing.
  • Something your business needs (B2B pricing, a second market, a faster checkout) can't be done without custom code.

If it's the platform: work out what the stack really costs before you redesign anything on it. Our €890 Stack Cost Audit puts a monthly number on your current setup and on the alternatives, before you commit to either. Ask about it.

Question 3: is it a conversion problem or a traffic problem?

Check visitors before conversion rate. If 300 people visit a month, a 20% better checkout means a handful of orders. That's a marketing and search problem: content, ads, being findable in Google and in AI answers.

If traffic is the issue: neither a redesign nor an audit is the first spend.

When a redesign is the right call

When you know the leak, the fix is visual or structural (navigation, product page layout, brand that no longer fits the price point), and the platform is fine. Then a redesign has a brief, and you can measure it against the before.

Where to start

Our €150 Store Performance Audit covers speed, conversion, SEO, AI search visibility and app costs, and ends with a fix list in order of value. It has to find at least 5 fixes worth more than the fee, or you get your money back. Book the audit
