Your store can rank #1 on Google and still not exist to ChatGPT

Ranking on Google doesn't mean ChatGPT or Perplexity will mention your store. Five technical reasons stores get skipped, and a 10-minute check you can do today.

Quick answer: Google ranks pages. AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity pick a few sources to quote in an answer. A store can do well at the first and never appear in the second, usually for technical reasons: AI crawlers are blocked, product data has no structured markup, or the pages never answer a question directly. Most of it is fixable in a day or two.

Two different games

When someone searches Google, they get a list of links and choose one. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's a good waterproof hiking backpack under €150?", they get an answer that names two or three products or shops. There's no page two.

To be one of those names, an AI system has to be able to read your pages, understand what you sell, and trust that your page answers the question. Ranking on Google helps, but it doesn't guarantee any of those three.

Five reasons stores get skipped

1. AI crawlers are blocked. Many stores block AI crawlers without knowing it, through a robots.txt rule, a security plugin, or a CDN bot setting. If GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot can't fetch your pages, those tools can't cite them.

2. No structured data. Structured data (schema markup) tells machines what a page is: a product, its price, its brand, whether it's in stock, its reviews. Yotpo's 2026 analysis reports that 65% of pages cited by Google AI Mode and 71% of pages cited by ChatGPT include structured data.

3. Pages don't answer anything. A product page with a name, a price and three lines of marketing copy doesn't answer "which backpack is best for wet weather?". Pages that get quoted tend to open with a direct, short answer, then back it up.

4. Thin product data. Missing GTINs, brand names, availability and prices make it harder for AI shopping features to match your product to a question. Shopify fills some of this in, but themes and apps often leave gaps.

5. Nothing tells AI tools where to look. An llms.txt file is a plain-text summary of your site written for AI systems: who you are, what you sell, which pages matter. It's a young convention, not an official standard yet, but it costs almost nothing to add.

A 10-minute check you can do today

  1. Ask the AI. Put the question your customers would ask into ChatGPT and Perplexity, for example "best [your product] in [your country]". Note who gets named.
  2. Read your robots.txt. Open yourstore.com/robots.txt and search for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. A "Disallow: /" under any of them blocks that tool.
  3. Check your CDN or firewall. If you use Cloudflare or a similar service, look for an AI bot or "bot fight" setting that blocks crawlers by default.
  4. Test one product page. Paste its URL into Google's Rich Results Test. If no Product markup shows up, AI tools get less to work with too.
  5. Look for your llms.txt. Open yourstore.com/llms.txt. A 404 means you don't have one.

What we did on our own site

Here's what's in place on focuseddeveloper.org:

  • robots.txt explicitly lets GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended crawl the site
  • an llms.txt file lists our services, prices and key pages in plain text
  • the main service pages (audit, landing page sprint, Shopify starter) carry structured data for each offer and its price

Want us to check it?

The €150 Store Performance Audit includes an AI search visibility check alongside speed, conversion, SEO and app bloat, and like everything else in the report, it has to earn its fee: at least 5 real fixes or your money back. What counts as a fix.

FAQ

Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my store?

Usually because AI crawlers can't read your pages, your products have little structured data, or your content doesn't answer the questions people ask. Check robots.txt first.

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimisation: making your pages easy for AI assistants to read, understand and quote. It overlaps heavily with good technical SEO.

Does my Shopify store need an llms.txt file?

It's not required and not an official standard yet. It's cheap to add and gives AI tools a clear summary of your store.
